Summer Reading Activities Are Back This Year!

Portage County District Library (PCDL) is excited to announce that summer reading activities will be back this year-

NOTE: You MUST REGISTER by contacting your preferred branch. The online registration form is used only for virtual online programs!

 

Tales with Tails Summer Reading 2021!
June 7 through July 31

We will have a system-wide passive program consisting of a BINGO game card (available for download below in PDF format). Other branch, in-person activities and events will vary with each branch location. Plans are still being drawn up, so look for your preferred branch's schedule of activities soon. They will also be posted on this page as soon as they become available. Please note that adults and children age 2 and older MUST wear a mask to all in-person activities and events. Also, social distancing will be required.

Aurora summer reading information!

 Summer Preschool Storytime -  Mondays at 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., June 7 through July 5

A storytime for 2-5 year olds with a “Tails and Tales” theme.  Animal stories, songs, fingerplays and a take-home craft will be shared.  Programs will be held on the front lawn of the library.  Bring a blanket to sit on, and face masks are required for adults and children over the age of 2.  Registration is required.  In case of rain, programs will be held in the downstairs gallery of the library.

 

Summer Reading Program for children in K-5th grade - Tuesday afternoons and one Wednesday afternoon from June 8 to July 6

With the exception of the Zoom program on June 23, programs will be held on the front lawn of the library.  Bring a blanket or chair to sit on, and face masks are required for adults and children over the age of 2.  Registration is required.

JUNE 8- Amy of Aurora’s Canine University will bring her trusty service dog!  Sign up for her 1:30 or 3:00 p.m. talk about working dogs.
 
JUNE 15- Outback Ray will entertain with his live animal show at 1:00 p.m.
 
JUNE 23- Laura Numeroff, best-selling author of If you Give a Mouse a Cookie, will make a Zoom presentation at 1:30 p.m.  
 
JUNE 29- Dina Shimandle of Springs Honey will share her family's beekeeping secrets.  Meet on the front lawn of the library at 1:30 p.m.
 
JULY 6- Owl pellet program led by Audubon Society, will be held on the library lawn at 1:30 p.m.

 

TEEN SUMMER READING PROGRAM- Passive program June 7 through July 9

Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to participate by completing one of several challenges which will qualify them to enter weekly drawings. The list of challenges is diverse and includes: Reading a book about someone you admire, making one of the crafts available at the library, and mowing the lawn for a neighbor or relative.

Each week a $10 Target gift card will be given away. Teens who complete one challenge a week over the five-weeks will be entered into a drawing for a Grand Prize drawing for a $25 Amazon gift card. You can find the complete list of challenges and instructions on submitting completed challenges printed on the list (located below in PDF format).

 

ADULT SUMMER READING- Passive program June 1 through July 10

Adult patrons at the Aurora Memorial Library are invited to enter to win a prize bag during the adult summer weekly prize bag give away from June 1 through July 10.  Adult patrons may enter each time they are in the library during the program dates with no item checkout necessary.  Weekly drawings will occur each Saturday with two prize bag winners during the duration of the contest.

 

ADULT SUMMER READING 10-BOOK CHALLENGE- June 7 through September 4

Adults can pick up a log to record 10 or more books read during the summer. Completed logs earn an entry into a drawing on September 8 for one of two gift cards.

 

ADULT BOOKMARK CRAFT- Begins June 7 and while supplies last

Adults can pick up a fun, animal-themed kit to make a 5-D diamond-painted bookmark. There are 60 kits available, so pick one up early.

Summer Reading Virtual Crafts- Mondays 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm from June 7 to August 16

Join us for virtual crafts all summer long. Each crafting meeting has a limit of 23 attendees (except where noted):

JUNE 7- H20 Fun (Watercolor leis, flowers, and butterflies);
JUNE 14- Father's Day crafts;
JUNE 21- Sequin box;
JUNE 28- July 4th crafts (Red, white, and blue);
JULY 12- Fish sand magnet and pinwheel;
JULY 19- Foam crafts;
JULY 26- Make a wooden bird feeder;
AUGUST 2- Foam visors;
AUGUST 9- Make a no-sew pillow**;
AUGUST 16- Critter key chain and backpack**.

Summer Reading Storytime- Tuesdays 11:00 am to 11:30 am from June 8 to August 31

An in-person storytime will take place every Tuesday, weather permitting. During inclement weather, storytime will be canceled for that day. Please note, since storytime will be presented outdoors, bring a blanket and/or chair to sit on. Call 330-527-4378 to register or for more information.

 

ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM- Passive program June 7 to August 31

Adults are invited to pick up an adult summer reading log. Those who complete one challenge will get a small prize. Those adults who complete all three challenges will receive a larger prize as well as an entry slip into a drawing for a $50 fuel gift card drawing. Two winners will be chosen.

The challenges include read the book to a movie you have already seen or watch a movie of a book you have already read, make a craft from a library item you have checked out, and, if you tend to always check out DVDs, check out another material format instead. Ask library staff at the circulation desk to mark your log to show you have completed a challenge for the small prize.

Summer Reading Program- Tuesdays 11:00 am to 12:00 pm

This summer all kids in grades K-5 are invited to participate in a reading bingo game to win prizes. You are invited to attend outdoor programs and participate in online activities too. Visit the library to pick up the weekly crafts, supplies, and information needed to complete the planned activities.

Virtual activities and events:

JUNE 15- TBA

JUNE 22- An owl program via Zoom by Ohio Bird Sanctuary
Learn about owls that live in our area and we will dissect our owl pellets. Limited to 20 participants.

JUNE 23- Author of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Laura Numeroff, will be interviewed via Zoom.

JULY 6- A digital escape room

 

Summer Storytime- Wednesdays 11:00 am to 11:20 am

Stories and rhymes about woodland animals. Meeting outside the library, it is recommended you bring a blanket, towel, or chair to sit on. If the weather is uncooperative, storytime will be canceled.

 

Teens- You are invited to read books and submit a short book review to be entered into a drawing for prizes.

 

ADULT SUMMER PROGRAM- Passive program from June 7 through August 6

It's a scavenger hunt for jokes. Adults, or families, are invited to search the library for pictures of jokes related to Tails and Tales theme. Find at least 3 pictures to be eligible for an instant prize - a piece of candy. Entries will be collected in an entry jar for later drawing.The winner will get the gift bag full of items related to summer/garden and a box of chocolates.
