Traditionally, summer reading programs are designed to encourage elementary-aged children to keep in the practice of reading during summer vacation, aiming to prevent what is often referred to as “the summer slide” during these months. Prevention continues to be the main objective of summer reading programs and for many families with children of this age, the public library is the only community space available during the summer months where there’s free access to educational and cultural enrichment activities and programs. Other benefits for children attending library summer reading programs include developing positive attitudes about reading, books, the library, and they begin cultivating many essential life skills such as working cooperatively with others and furthering a sense discovery through experiences.
